I like Mings but central defence is one key area where there just isn’t any competition for places. Hause is decent as an injury/suspension cover but he’s never going to be pushing for a regular starting position ahead of Mings or Konsa. Engels didn’t play a single minute last season so is clearly not in our plans in any capacity at all.

I think we need 3 good centre backs who can compete with each other for game time, and then a reasonable 4th choice back up who can step up when required (I.e. Hause).

We definitely need improvements at CB, the only reason we've had a solidish defence this season is playing between the sticks.
Mings, even when he's having a great game, has a couple of blunders in him.
I don't think he has the mentality to be a CB, you know the put it in row Z type of thing that's needed some times. Hause on the other hand has that mentality. Speaking of Hause, it would be nice to work out how many times he's played when we haven't conceded.
Someone made the point that we've looked more solid with Konza at RB and Hause at CB.

Compared to the games preceding it we looked more solid, but we looked so much better again at the start of the season with Cash-Konsa-Mings-Targett. Mainly because the midfield was playing its part in protecting them. Konsa is the best CB we've had at least since Laursen and totally wasted at RB. Hause is good defensively but limited with the ball at his feet.

To be honest I could play left-back but you really wouldn't want me to.
I don't think we have anyone coming through the u23s so I can see us buying another left-back, as competition/cover for Targett who has improved beyond recognition

Hasn't Chrisene played left back at times? Not specialist though.

Yes, he has, he's seen as a midfielder now I think, a bit of Gareth Barry about him from what I've seen. I actually thought he signed as a left-back but at 16 at the time it's too early to pigeonhole him I think
I agree. Pigeonholing young players is not a good idea. Ajax used to have a system where their young players never played the same position in consecutive matches. As they got older their best positions were found but in the meantime they gained an overall insight into the game. I believe Cruyff took this philosophy to Barcelona.

Yes I invented that system, I had one lad who was under11's tell me he was a CB and I just said to him I'll be the judge of that, you're a player. Another one was a striker for Halesowen town, I told him he was playing right back, he said he didn't play right back, I said how about the subs bench. He played right-back for the next 3 seasons:lol:

An improvement in central defence would be Ben White from Brighton.
He can play CB, RB and DM and looked pretty solid playing right-side CB in an International game for England.

Yes, I said that a few weeks ago, he'll cost 40m sounds a lot until you think Nathan Ake was £41m last summer and can't get a look in at city .

I figured we could get him for a bit less than £40m, maybe closer to £30m.
What would make him a good buy, is his age (23) and potential for improvement.
Someone mentioned Man City are prepared to offer us Bernardo Silva in part exchange for JG. Great player but, I'd heard he wanted to go to Spain, possibly with Atletico Madrid. Besides I don't think we'd be able to equal his pay just yet.
I figure if we were going to let JG go, we'd have already got a replacement in, probably Periera from WBA.

Brighton turned 30m down last summer from Leeds.
Another option is Nathan Ake who believe it or not is still only 26! His wages and desire to play for Villa may be a problem.
Bournemouth fans think he is the best player they have ever had and far better than Mings. Probably like we think Paul Mcgrath was better than John Terry

There was a time when I'd have said yes in a heartbeat to Ake but, those days are long gone.
As for White, I did say closer to £30m, meaning between £30 & £40m, maybe throwing in a player as makeweight.

I don't think we'll be signing any starters in defence for big money.

The 5 at the back have all earned another season to grow and get better together (yes even Mings despite his critics, he improved 10 fold in the 2nd half of the season).

If Engels goes we'll need cover for Konsa, and we obviously need cover for Targett and Emi. Other than that we're good.

Putting in a bid for Adam Hlozek of Sparta Prague might be a bit of good business. He's only 18, can play either wing, preferring the left, or CF and last season he played 19 games, scored 15 goals and assisted 8

Our defence is fine, except for LB backup, and even there Hause can play at a pinch. Mings isn't perfect (who is) but he's great at organising the defence and it's that in part which has made Konsa look so good. If Guilbert has done as well as he appears to have done on his loan out I think we'll keep him as backup to Cash. Engels is in a strange position but I suspect he'll stay to provide further CB backup and use in cup runs.

It's midfield and forwards where we need that bit extra, and Buena gives us some of that.
