Only in America...

The McConnell news yesterday, expressing support for Impeachment, may bring the numbers to 17. There are a solid 5, but if leadership backs it in an attempt to bring the Republican Party back as a party of some legitimacy, they could support it. Either way, this really, really hurts the Republican Party image for the next generation.

McConnell can fuck off. He enabled Trump for 4 years.

I read, in a BBC article, 17 Republicans needed and around 20 are "open" to the idea. Close run thing, but I guess it will depend on how their own states view the madman. Turkeys, Christmas and all that. Even turkeys want the gravy train!

McConnell can indeed fuck off.

Glad he has come around but it is far, far too late.

And yes, Republican's need 17 senators to agree to throw Trump out of office. I will be surprised if this works but there is a better chance than back in 2019. Biggest difference now is that Trump is going to be out anyway, some Republicans may decide now is a good time to jump ship. They are all cowards but I'm glad they have come back to reality.

Some have; many haven't. And I suspect any grasp on reality they have is, to say the least, somewhat tenuous.

We will see what happens now, but if Joe and Kamala are reading the Imps Off Topic Forum this is what I recommend:

1. Vaccine, vaccine, vaccine. Treat it like a military operation and make it a military operation. National guard up and down towns and cities and let's make it simple. 75 and over between now and the end of the month, or an ID showing you work in healthcare - BOOM get the vaccine. 65 and older the first two weeks of February or an ID showing you work in education - BOOM get the vaccine. Last two weeks in February 55 and older - BOOM get the vaccine. After March 1, 45 and older - BOOM get the vaccine. After the Ides of March, anyone that's left - BOOM get the vaccine. Couple it with a federal health education message about the importance of receiving the vaccine.

2. Repeal the Trump tax cuts ASAP and get rid of that unfunded liability that only helped the top 1%.

3. Get the public option into the ACA (a precursor to single payer) and strong arm Manchin and other right-leaning Congress members to make it happen. Take it to the people and win the optics of this. Don't cave in to expected Republican lies on this topic. The people will back this if they understand it.

4. Prosecute to the full extent of the law the corruption of the last 4 years. The US constitution has been shat on and that cannot be tolerated. By all means work with the Romney's and Murkowski's, but do not give ground to the nut jobs within the Republican party or fear the projections of violence they will espouse. An impeachment trial is the beginning not the end of what needs to happen, and when people refuse to testify stick them in a federal jail until they do so. Bannon got a pardon which removes his right to claim the 5th.

5. Invest in jobs and industries that have a future and do so in regions that need this investment. Coal mining is not coming back, but other skilled labor is emerging. Give tax breaks to companies locating in West Virgina, the mid-west, and other places that are a ground swell of Trumpism. Georgia turned blue in part because of the changing face of Atlanta and the suburbs over the last 10 years. Atlanta brought in jobs and growth, and educated people moved there. Atlanta benefited, Georgia benefited, and the nation did in the election. Repeat that success in Ohio, Michigan, and South Carolina. New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, do not need help more than these other places.

6. Establish a commission to review and make recommendations for electoral reform. The two-Senator per state is incredibly unequal as a form of representation and while that would require a constitutional amendment something must be done. Coupled with tetris-style gerrymandering we see in the House and democracy is at best on life-support.

7. Pack the Supreme Court and disband the filibuster if you have to. The bullshit that was pulled when Merrick Garland was nominated, coupled with the Amy Coney Barrett naked hypocrisy, was a disgusting example of "because we can". That must be countered and countered hard.

8. Give a clear path to citizenship to Dreamers. These young people are the best of us. They work hard, strive to receive an education, and were brought here as children. Open American arms and say "you're here, let's see what you can do to make the nation better". Do it now.

9. Wish list but probably a bridge too far now (lay the groundwork with a PR Campaign) - Make DC a State, and Puerto Rico as well (if Puerto Ricans want it). As mentioned above, single payer healthcare is greatly needed. Increase taxes on the ultra-wealthy and close corporate off-shore loopholes.

Make it happen Joe. History is watching.
