Coronavirus

One of the "plusses" of the Covid-19 pandemic is that there were (until 20th December anyway) NO lab confirmed cases of 'flu so far this winter.

The 2020 flu season continues with no lab confirmed influenza cases or outbreaks notified, from the start of the flu season up until last Sunday, December 20, Irish Medical Times reports.

Yes, said the other day, if and when I need to go to the doctors or hospital during winter months, I'm going to continue with hand sanitiser and face masks, on the off chance it helps in not picking up coughs, colds, or flu. Easy enough to do (for most of us anyway) and makes sense. Far more common Far East countries, might become more normal here I guess, but normal or not, I'll do it!

Would it not have made sense when the government found out the new strain was more transmissible, to have upped the guidance. Try to keep a 3m space where possible eg walking behind someone, and wear face masks even outside in public areas such as shopping areas.

People won't even stand a metre apart though, there is no sense amongst so many sadly.

Nope, not skipping, at all. You can say that as many times as you want.

Life isn't fair, life isn't ideal. That is just life. My story echoes that, it is a nightmare that most people I know don't think they'd have coped with

I hate our Government, I think they are a shambles, but for Covid, I am not picking and choosing, because it isn't my right to. Ridiculous or not, people should try for the great good. Or at the very least, don't come on sites like this and boast about not giving a damn, because you'll get your answer.

The law says you don't do what you are doing. The law might well be an ass. So are people whinging on about the rules and not following them though. It is typical of this country.

Im not going to agree with you because you don’t know where I live, in the time I’ve left comments on here for all you know I could’ve gone for a walk which means I would’ve gone to Worcestershire, point being the tier system is ridiculous. If the only thing I do wrong is cross an imaginary line a few hundred yards away for the purpose of health and fitness then by all means judge me. I encountered more people in Aldi and Jack’s today and far more when I go back to work.

A friend of mine put this up on Facebook a few days ago.

The Irish Government has now completely abandoned scientific evidence and data driven debate in favour of complete hysteria! Almost a year ago there were over 600 people admitted to hospital EACH WEEK with Flu and the number in ICU was 94. There was no talk of public restrictions or shutting down the economy!
We now have FAR LESS people in ICU with Covid-19 (34 people) and there are only 454 people in Hospital TOTAL with Covid and despite that the Government is likely to announce later today that it will close the entire country on the world's most strict lockdown for MONTHS to come!
This is virtue signaling at its worst! 10 days ago the Government Health Service was forced once again to admit under a freedom of information request that it has yet to record a SINGLE CASE of seasonal FLU in the country this year! Ireland averages between 20,000 and 25,000 Flu cases EVERY YEAR!
Numbers don't lie, it's obvious that the lion's share of people hospitalized and in ICU are there BECAUSE OF FLU and also happen to have tested positive for Covid-19. The majority of people in Hospital WITH Covid-19 contracted it AFTER admission to hospital (an easy study of the admission and discharge numbers since August 1st prove this).
Our family will be actively ignoring any and all level 5 restrictions and will be encouraging and patronizing all businesses who do likewise. The Covid-19 Cult has to be reined in. We will also be travelling to jurisdictions where common sense still holds sway instead of constant fear mongering and superstition.

Her statistics are probably correct (I've not checked them) but am not persuaded that her proposed actions (as set out in the final paragraph) are in any way responsible or acceptable. One of my best friends died with Covid-19 jusr before Christmas and whilst I miss him greatly I'd still prefer to stay on this side of the great divide for a bit longer and intend to use an abundance of caution until I get vaccinated (whenever that will be) and to remain sensible thereafter.

I’ll give another recent, ridiculous example of the tier system. The Drawbridge pub in Shirley, I pass it quite often going to work, I was very surprised to see it open at the start of December with people inside and outside eating/drinking, when I got home I found out it was in Worcestershire, just. I’d imagine (like my barbers) pretty much all of their custom comes from the other side of the boundary in Shirley proper. The tiered system simply doesn’t work.

I live less than a mile from the Drawbridge as the crow flies , but haven't gone there since lockdown started . I don't want to be where lots of people congregate and didn't want to run the risk of catching it or passing it on. I still wouldn't go now even though I have had Covid.

Anyway the food there is crap.

Ive personally never been, only been past by car or bike and it’s always fairly busy. There’s a few other pubs nearby where it would be similar, The White Swan and The Packhorse in Wythall/Hollywood, can imagine a fair few people go there from Maypole way.

Absolutely not a chance. No way has that just disappeared.

Well, the measure we take to limit Covid would mean Flu transmission would be very rare. It does make you think how we'll respond in future years, after Covid.

Maybe there will be some more hand washing, and we will see more masks?

Was talking about this earlier funnily enough, you can see in future flu seasons people being asked and older people for sure wearing masks and upping hygiene. Maybe “work from home when you can” is encouraged for normal flu? I think it was Witty who said we’ve learned habits we have to take into the future.

I can now tell you that Mrs BBJ had a covid-19 test yesterday (she was coughing and spluttering a lot earlier in the week). She got the results a few minutes ago and to our great relief, she hasn't got it.

I'm glad the "Mother of the forum" tested negative.

but my kids education is paramount especially as one is extremely behind and I'm sorry but the argument that they will be all right doesn't wash. They need professional teaching in their school.

100 percent with you on this. Its who has a horse in the race i guess. Its very easy to say shut the schools when you haven't got kids at school and its easy for me to say the kids need to be in school because in my case i have one 5 months from A levels who has missed 3 months of his courses , has had nearly a year of disruption, stress and is still expected to be doing exams competing with his equivalents in Scotland, NI and Wales who are not doing exams. The other will be preparing for GCSE's this time next year
My lad was due to do his mocks next week and that's now changed with a few days notice. These are very young people.

They have not had any online lessons , just work set on email. Some marked , some not. We haven't had parents evenings. Remote learning mantra from the government is a joke and a lie.
Make no mistake with what has been achieved at private schools who had the funding and facilities to go online immediately the more the state kids are out of education the bigger the gap between haves and have not widens.

I appreciate what JF said about him being able to catch up and progress despite missing all his schooling but that is one individual. What we are facing is thousands upon thousands of kids needing to catch up months of lost time. There is no leeway for this amount to catch up because the next year are coming through and so on and on. There is no capacity to catch up.

The rave has been going since Boxing Day I think, they didn't break it up, they just stopped more entering and fined everyone who left at the gate.

Was talking more about the number of fines. Surprised they didn't go in with koshes to be fair!
