The National League 2019/20 Season Thread

Yep, them, York, Stockport, Wrexham, Halifax, Torquay, Chesterfield, Barnet, Bradford Park Avenue, Hereford, et al.

The question is when ???

Stockport have been noted, in certain terms, as the new Salford City . Seems over a million spent already , or so the stockport drums are saying . Rooney from Barrow , Connor Jennings from Tranmere ? and Alex Reid to name but three . The drums are also beating a League Champions tune . time will tell .

Rooney was £75k, the others were frees but they do have some money behind them from a local guy. They've been very aggressive in the transfer market already this summer.

Mostly covered in the National League thread.

Good photo, Simon Weaver must be so proud; and Jack Muldoon gets another medal. Good to see two popular ex-Imps enjoying success.

Absolutely. And it has happened by merit on the field. For me though, the league is diluted every time a Fleetwood, Barrow, Stevenage or Crawley come up - getting into the league is the absolute pinnacle of their achievements and still there is no real interest in their town. I appreciate many of them are relatively small places, but it’s to the leagues detriment to have teams that average 2k replacing those that in some instances average 4 times that. I get it’s about success on the field and the pyramid has to have ups and downs but I can’t really believe there are many (any) chairman or league officials salivating over Barrow and Harrogate next season.
Unfair on Barrow, who were founder members of the Third Division North in 1921 and remained in the League until 1972 when they were unjustly voted out by clubs who didn't fancy the long journey. Crawley and Stevenage are roughly the same size as Lincoln, although their attendances are affected by being London satellite towns. It does add interest to the League, which was effectively a closed shop prior to 1987: even some perennially successful non-league sides (Yeovil, Telford, Altrincham, Enfield and others) found it impossible to break down the attitudes of FL chairmen. Barrow, Workington and Southport were the last three clubs voted out before the change to automatic promotion, and all three were probably kicked out through geography. That most definitely was not fair, so which is the best system?

And Hartlepool, Darlington (more 'proper' old-time league clubs than Barnet and Hereford)

And Darwen (Anyone watched 'The English Game' on Netflix?)

Mark Stott , Founder and CEO of Vita Group Cheshire , based in Alderley Edge (very posh) . Seems stockport are financially stable and zero debt .

Geography, plus the fact they had crap attendances in the days when gate receipts were shared.

Not sure about geographical reasons in Southport's case, but they had finished in the re-election zone for three seasons in a row and it's true they were notorious for occasionally getting attendances in three figures.

Dover seem in trouble. Sympathetic towards their supporters, but when you're a pr!ck of a Chairman, don't expect people to help you out when you need it.

"Chairman Jim Parmenter has released the following statement.

The Board have been busy assessing the clubs financial position and immediate future due to the very difficult circumstances of the COVID 19 pandemic.

The club is still unsure of its income in the coming season but the Board are clear income will greatly reduced.

The club has 14 players under contract for next season and at a meeting last week the clubs position was explained in detail to the players and staff.

At that meeting the players and staff were asked to accept a 20% short-term reduction in salary to assist the club in its efforts to stay solvent and keep the club alive bearing in mind the club will move from four to three days training.

The management have accepted the proposal, however, unfortunately the players have not agreed.

Therefore it is with great regret that I must announce that all of the squad are now available for free transfer as an initial immediate step.

I must further inform supporters that if a solution or further investment cannot be found by the end of August it is likely that the Directors will consider the club insolvent and as a consequence will be forced to cease trading.

The directors are doing everything they can to keep the club afloat, but have reached an impasse and require the support of our playing squad.

Season ticket purchases are fully protected and a full refund will be issued if the worse happens, so supporters can continue to purchase in confidence."

Mustn’t forget Gainsborough who’ve been waiting to get back since 1912. Replaced by non other than ourselves after a one year sebatical in the Central League.

there will be quite a few clubs in that predicament the coming months . shame for all the supporters of these clubs . Not only national league either .

York are about to sort their finances out - Ben Godfrey has a reported 20% sell on clause from transferring to Norwich (with a 500K initial fee upping to £1m reportedly). Godfrey is now linked with a move for £25m-£50m to a European giant, Dortmund and Milan have been mentioned.
