Ryan Jackson

Back for a second spell. No complaints with that. One of Edinburgh’s better signings.
His attitude towards the end of his last stay was poor. That may have been down to the management of the time though. One thing is for certain that SE won’t put up with anything less than 100%

Quite happy with this signing, after all we need a long throw in specialist if Byrne is on his way out!

Despite having a long throw, we rarely actually scored as a result of using it. My memory of him throwing it long was the ball flying into the box but usually easily cleared as he was unable to accurately aim it onto the head of a Gillingham player.

The problem for me at the end was that he was outstanding in the first season, but then got injured around November in his second season and came back looking scared to hit the afterburners when running with the ball in case he pulled a muscle. In some ways he was very much like Garmston but managed to play more than 90 minutes without knackering himself again.

Why sign a third right back???
I guess Fuller and Hobson are definitely going. But frankly if that is the choice I would have Fuller any day.A negative step in my opinion. If he is being brought in as a reserve then shouldn't the budget in other areas be sorted first ?????
If we had no right back on the books and Fuller wasn't available we have had worse yes.Very average defensively might offer more going forward but at a cost .

With budget issues a very odd signing indeed. Massively hope I am wrong and he is a different player than the one we saw a few years ago.

He is clearly coming in as our first choice right back and evans is keen to get rid of fuller.

I dont think it matters 'which order' you sign players in. I dont think hes waiting to sort one before moving on to work on the next. He will be working on multiple targets, for all positions. Some will take longer than others and so some will be anounced before others. They wint be announced in importance order. I'll start worrying come mid September, if weve not signed anyone, but not before then.

Hobson is not up to standard and I'm sure Evans will try to encourage him to move on.

Fuller has been amazing for us, but he can't go on forever. It is less of a risk to replace him completely than to hope he'll last another season and not be a liability in November when his legs ago and we can't afford to bring someone in.

I love Fuller as a player but I would like to remember him as someone who defied expectations to be one of the first names on the sheet than someone whose legacy would be ruined by poor performances.

Sorry I can't agree .Unless their is a problem that we don't know about with Fuller's fitness. Jackson is not even close.Hess was much older when he gave up and Fuller is a fitness fanatic if ever I saw one.The only way I can see Jackson being a better bet is if we are going to play three at the back and Jackson as a wing back then maybe .But that is a system Evan's showed no signs of trying with Ogilvie, Ehmer and Tucker so why try now?

Jackson is cheaper perhaps. Not a good start if that is the road we are force to travel down.

Never saw this one coming but happy with it. He brings increased athleticism and pace and will get forward more often. As my son in law observed Evans and Raynor seem to get that important bit more out of players, think Ogilvie. I am sure that Fuller will find a good opportunity somewhere else.

Mr Evans did say at the end of the curtailed season that if the season had been a non covid season Barry wouldnt have played as many games!

Seen comments on various sites that Mr Evans wants younger players! Ryan is 4 years at least younger than Barry! The interview on the official site he said if you have a player age 32 for instance and you can replace him with a better player a few years younger thats the way to go! Ryan is a better player than Barry!

That makes no sense so if we had played our remaining games Fuller would have been dropped why???

I’ll do my best to explain the situation Chris.
Barry has been a brilliant servant but the Manager has decided that his days are numbered in this league. That is actually his job, to make calls like that.
Evans found out that Barry had a clause in his contract allowing him to activate another year if he chose to.
Evans respected that but told him face to face that it would be unlikely that he’d see much first team football.
So Barry is free to look for another club while safe in the knowledge that he has another year guaranteed in wages.
The manager has signed a replacement so Barry now has choices.
Stay and see his contract out as backup.
Leave for a longer contract elsewhere.
He should be doing his badges and looking for a player coach role if the opportunity arises.

This situation is not unusual in football.
Players come and go
In two years time, Ryan Jackson will find himself in a similar position.
They all sign short term contracts.
