The Fitness/Nutrition Thread

Yeah feeling loads better. I don't get out of breath walking upstairs anymore. lol

Loving the nice long 5 - 6 mile walks me and Nat are doing during lockdown. Lucky to live in such a nice place really.

Just finished my application for the next series of SAS they who dares.
Not sure when the casting/fitness tests will be going ahead but done it to push me to get to elite fitness. My fitness is very good at present but I really want that end goal to strive for that sweet spot.
Only major down side is that I am scared stiff of heights.

So many people are. Great plan though. Would love to do it, but despite my positive attitude and fighting spirit, there are limits, I'd not be able to do a few of the things safely.

Good luck, that would be awesome mate.

Ab exercises done this morning, now for the weights session. I can't remember what session I'm on, so a nice surprise when I go into my gym!

That was one of the best chest (and tricep) sessions I've done in years. Things really are going well at the moment, long may that last.

Loving working slowly and surely on great form, something I think comes with age and/or experience. Throwing weights around and racking up loads of numbers is of no interest at all, making my muscles work under controlled strain and growing them right, is!

Great session in the gym. Had nearly a week off whilst doing the gym floor, because of having to move out and back in nearly 300kg of weights. It made my lower back sore (got spina biffada there, something I didn't know until a brain ache specialist told me) and really, thinking about it, I was stupid not to put my weight belt on. My foolish mistake.

Anyway, a forced rest is fine, the resting part is the bit I always struggle with because I love training and do know that I miss a fair amount with brain ache flair ups, so when on form health wise, I don't like missing sessions.

AND THEN the reward. A nice rump steak on a bed of onion/toms/mush infused with a little maple syrup and a side of mash potato mixed with course grain mustard.

And for pudding, a protein cookie.

Whoop and what not.

Oh and bought and used for the first time a squat/bench rack. Very useful.

Silly price, think things have gone up because of the virus and a rise in people working out from home, but needed it for safety and didn't want to wait.

(Link to ebay if you don't know what the rack is! https://tinyurl.com/y76c6oct )

I've had the last two weeks off too.
First I pulled a muscle getting out of bed.... 3 days after that my big dog was in the field learning recall.... noticed some sheep in a field... ran off... somehow got over a 4 foot barbed wire fence... not sure how he did that... rounded up all sheep. Took me ages to get him. Luckily a sheep submissed and lay down so while he was licking his face I managed to get his lead back on...
Then i was stuck in a field with no way out surrounded by barbed wire with a 70kg dog.
Went to the lowest part of the fence and somehow picked him up over it safely (for him)... I managed to tear what feels like every muscle in my back and shoulders.

Jorel is now not allowed off the lead and will have to do recall in the garden.

Still losing.... I'm now 11 stone 13lb.

Starting weight in January was 13 stone 10.5lb.

I'm now concentrating more on toning and trying to get some body definition.

Had a go at that 22 day abs thing that Fear posted for the first time yesterday. I really struggled. I've never had abs. So I'm building from scratch. Will keep trying though, took a new photo of my stomach this morning so will keep it up till end of May and then take another for comparison.

Don't forget I said I wouldn't do that every day mate, abs, like all muscles, also need rest to grow.

I've been doing prison style workouts as I only have a 15kg dumbell in my house.

I'm certainly shrinking down, at the gym I can squat north of 4 plates and bench north of 3. I have to say, I haven't really missed the gym so my long term working out future is a bit uncertain.

Floating the idea of a home gym but it's a lot of cost and effort and prices are ridiculous at the moment.

Interval session done . I went to the cricket club where I saw precisely no one and did a one mile warm up the 10 x 400m laps flat out with a minute break in between.

Really good work out as the ground slopes a bit so the longest side in up hill and you know about it.

Look out for Jorel mate, a lady farmer down here shot two dogs last year, no questions asked for sheep worrying.

Best thing I ever invested in, a professional gym. It is definitely my happy place. But agree, you couldn't do it at the moment, the prices are ridiculous. Bought a squat / bench rack as mentioned above, I am not totally sure on the prices usually, but looks at least £100 more expensive than it should be to me! But I needed it and so got it. Some of the more expensive kit, like the cable machine and vibro plate, I couldn't make an exception for at this expensive time though! Luckily, I am already set up!

Your muscle will soon bounce back btw, as you probably know, muscle memory is a wonderous thing!

It's tempting. I was finding the gym an increasing chore before the lockdown to be honest, it felt like wasted time. I'd go on weekends then after work and I was generally feeling I could have used that time better. I always get there (and back) on foot so adds 50 odd minutes to the time. At this stage of my lifting 'career' I cannot really progress without steroids or the sort of dedication that I just don't have anymore, I have other hobbies that I find a lot more interesting.

With the home gym I'd at least have the flexibility to do it whenever I want, optimal time being during the lunch hour (since I work from home most of the week in normal times).

What is the motivation, the amount you can lift, building muscle, toning, fitness? All those!?

It does change over the years I think. I tend not to give a rats arse how many of x, y, z I can do, how heavy it is and so on, that is for the younger mind sets. I do care very much about perfect form and all that sort of thing though. The size I got for Men's Health was around or just over 14 stone, can't totally remember, and I tipped just under 10% bodyfat. It took a hell of a lot of work, food and time I must admit. I'd rather 13 stone and below 10% now and that is what I'm working towards. But not racing towards.

And yes, at 14 stone I had reached my natural ability I'm sure, especially at the age (trying to think when it was, must be 4 or 5 years now, so 45-46 ish) but had no interest in getting bigger or as said, lifting more, that just fucks the joints and in 40's (and now 50's) that becomes more of a consideration.

Not sure what sort of age bracket you are, but I would recommend you start to think about the long term, the super heavy weights can be fun for a while, but there is just no way at all that they won't catch up with you at some point. If you are in your 20's or 30's, it seems a long way away getting to 50. It really isn't!

I had blood plasma treatment on 3 sides of my elbows (inside/outside of the one, inside of the other) and constant shockwave treatment these days (which is a miraculous treatment I find!)

Yeah I'm same as you Fear. I did concentrate on lifting stupid heavy, was walking around at about 16 stone. But had too much body fat. Was around the 20% figure.
Since breaking my back last year my goal is perfect form and toning. My back wouldnt hack the heavy stuff so my target is 10% body fat while maintaining a decent muscle mass.
I am running out of bones to break so I have to be really careful I stick to perfect form else I am prone to getting injured. Can still put on muscle with lower weight if the form is good and the intensity still stays high.

Only 'heavy' thing I do want to achieve, is double my bodyweight in a deadlift. Not massive for some, but got close a few times before operations or flair ups stopped it. I'm close again now, on 155kg and need to get to 165kg. Trouble is my lower back is sore at the moment so daren't push! lol
