This aint right, surely?????

I remember a jobsworth steward warning a guy pre-match to put his newspaper away - broadsheet style Guardian or Telegraph - cos it could be used as a weapon or something to that effect.

Think that was called a “Millwall Brick” back in the day wasn’t it? Very tightly rolled up, folded up newspaper is very hard indeed.
It was an elderly guy who wouldn't say boo to a goose; god knows what the steward was thinking.

A fan at Hull has been threatened with ejection over texting match updates during the game.
He claims he was approached by an "undercover" club official, yeah right.

This was discussed on Talk Sport last night and apparently it is to do with gambling. So for example if a penalty is awarded and Tom Eaves is preparing to take a penalty then considering the amount of.time that passes between awarding of a penalty and it being taken, a person would theoretically have time to place an in game bet that Eaves would score the next goal.

The other typical scenario is if the score is 1-1 with minutes to go and you have a bet it'll end a draw. If a late goal is scored then you might have enough time to cash out in the time it takes the goal to feed through to the gambling site and the updating of odds. The delay might be long if there is some sort of VAR situation with the officials having a discussion if someone was offside etc. This is obviously at non-Premier League grounds that isn't full of Sky Sports cameras.

From what was said, it appears stewards at some grounds are being asked to look out for anyone excessively texting which may be an indication of abusing the gambling apps. I'm not sure of the law in terms of whether or not a person is officially allowed to gamble in ground and if stewards normally turn a blind eye.

Make you right Baghdad. I saw a documentary on BBC last week showing how that betting scam is done (for tennis in that particular case).

I use skybet app and have tried to add an inplay bet based on penalty being awarded or getting a free kick on edge of box (Luke o'Neil next goalscorer). Everytime the inplay was suspended within seconds of the incident. You would have to be very quick fingered to take advantage.

I cant comment on other apps but suspect they are similar.

What you do is fake up a betting joint, screw around with the live broadcast to make it two minutes late, and have a bunch of bogus cops crash in and "kill" everyone in the time between the ref blowing his whistle and the penalty being taken. A little rag time helps too.

One of the guys sat next to me last night spent the entire 2nd half on Sky Bet on his phone trying to place in play bets on next goalscorer or next team to score etc while also constantly checking the scores on other matches for his accumulator bets. I found it a bit sad but he just said it makes it more interesting, ie Newport awarded a free kick on the edge of our box so he quickly puts £10 on them to score next.

What's wrong with that? Matches are shown on TV and internet live, so you can be at home and phone through a bet. What needs to change is the bookies being so greedy that they halt all bets on a game once it has begun.

I’m pretty sure here in Oz with online betting apps that you can’t place “in game” bets with them. You have to phone or go to the bet shop in person.

Think it’s the rule with all sports. Might just be the ones taking place in Oz which would make sense so you cant be in the ground.

If that applies over here, perhaps he was on the phone to his mate standing inside the bookies. I have no sympathy for bookies anyway, so I feel if they are having to pay out it is their fault, but nothing to do with any steward or whoever is hosting the game.

I get the betting thing but, as the lad says, the club's Twitter feed updates a lot quicker than he can so any betting could be done based on that. It all just seemed a bit heavy handed to me and I thought of the lads who update on here during a match.
Talking of betting, I see Wayne Rooney has caused a stink already at Derby. He's been assigned the number 32 shirt then, coincidentally of course, 32Red (the club's shirt sponsor) suddenly announce a massive increase in their sponsorship deal. I wonder if the extra cash is just the right amount to cover Wayne's wages??????

Rob is spot on but it's to do with Far East betting syndicates. Because the top games are so heavily monitored the syndicates have moved to lower division games throughout the world. Stewards are told to look out for people constantly on phones or tablets. Like everything else the Clubs have to actively respond to these issues otherwise they get jumped on by the Authorities.

Slightly off subject but I remember a few seasons back, a steward told the lady in front of me that she could not take photos (home to Accrington) in the ground due to the Data Protection Act.

What exactly can the stewards do then? How can they know what any individual is actually doing on their mobile phone - it could be on line gambling, watching porn, playing a game or genuinely texting a friend or long lost granny in Australia. I recall a few seasons back when Scally got in a rage over anyone taking photos with their mobiles at home games or even using them to video goalmouth action. Mobiles have moved on - I would imagine 90 per cent of fans who go to games own one. The only way to stop this is to ban the use of phones totally at games or prevent them from being brought into the ground, as a banned item - you know the ones - similar to the flares that Charlton fans throw at Priestfield despite extensive searches by our pathetic stewards. Absolute load of bollox.

you still can't come into the ground with celery :grinning:
